The Department of Agricultural and Extension Education creates, conveys, and applies research-based knowledge through formal and non-formal methods to prepare and enable Extension and agricultural educators to serve the people of Virginia and the global community.
The Department of Agricultural and Extension Education offers a degree in Agricultural Sciences for those students who wish to strengthen their leadership skills and have an interest in agriculture and related areas. This program provides students a unique combination of breadth and depth in a strong science-based program. Students whose career objective can be found in agricultural or agricultural-related disciplines such as sales, education, training, Extension/outreach, business, and international work will find this degree very flexible and adaptable to their needs and interests.
Students in Agricultural Sciences can select at least two from several different minors or concentrations in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the College of Natural Resources, as well as in the Department of Biological Sciences to tailor-make their degree.
Graduate students in the Department of Agricultural and Extension Education seeking a Masters degree may choose from one of four option areas: Teacher Licensure, Extension Pre-service, a Extension, and Project and Thesis. Graduates seeking a Doctorate degree may choose from an Ed. D. or Ph. D. option.
The department conducts research in a variety of areas including: Governor's School for Agriculture, learning styles of students, adoption of innovation with a new course on biological applications of agriculture, knowledge and perceptions of agriculture, agricultural education and the great educational philosophers, and aquaculture education.
Virginia Cooperative Extension enables people to improve their lives through an educational process that uses scientific knowledge focused on issues and needs.
