Educational Opportunities

International

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences offers a number of opportunities for students to gain invaluable global experience and knowledge that can enhance their education.

  • More than 30 undergraduate and graduate courses have an international focus.
  • Virginia Tech is a partner institution in Global Seminar, which offers students from around the globe the opportunity to explore the dynamics of interrelationships among food, population, the environment, and socio-economic development. Through satellite, personal videoconferencing, software, and telecommunications technologies, students are able to exchange ideas and perspectives on the course topics with an international community of students and faculty members. The Virginia Tech Global Seminar cluster includes Germany, Italy, Mexico, Taiwan, the Republic of China, the Philippines, and Peru. (Professor Jim McKenna, Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences)
  • Education Abroad opportunities are virtually endless for students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Two of the specific programs that the college conducts are the Study Abroad in Australia — Environmental Land, Trade Policy, and Planning and the Study Abroad in South Africa — a reciprocal program with the University of Orange Free State. Students can also participate in a variety of other programs offered by Virginia Tech. To find out more about these specific programs and other education abroad opportunities, please visit the VT Education Abroad home page.
  • The Virginia Seafood Agricultural Research and Extension Center is participating in a technician and student exchange, and Extension and educational programming development to promote sustainable and biosecure Cobia production with the private sector group ARDA (association réunionnaise pour le développement de l’aquaculture) in France. (Extension Specialist Michael Schwarz, Virginia Seafood Agricultural Research and Extension Center)
  • The college conducted a project funded by the USDA International Science and Education Program to develop an international center in South Africa for collaborative studies in agriculture and related life sciences. (Professor Richard Fell, Entomology)
