Virginia Tech Poultry Science Club Receives Top Honors In Atlanta

LACKSBURG, Va., March 13, 2002 -- The Virginia Tech Poultry Science Club was recognized as the 2002 national club of the year by the US Poultry Science Club, and one of its members was named national club member of the year.

The award was presented at the US Poultry Science Club meeting held during the International Poultry Exposition in Atlanta, Ga., in January. Of the 29 clubs in attendance, Virginia Tech's chapter received the highest award based on an application and a review of chapter activities.

Todd Kiracofe, son of Carson and Sharon Kiracofe of Bridgewater and president of the Virginia Tech Poultry Science Club, was selected as the national club member of the year. Chosen from a pool of nine nominees, Kiracofe received a plaque and a $500 scholarship. These awards will enhance the recognition of the club in industry, he said.

Membership in the Virginia Tech club offers possibilities for community service, scholarship, social events, and job opportunities. Audrey McElroy, assistant professor of animal and poultry sciences, is the senior adviser for the Virginia Tech chapter, and Paul Siegel, university distinguished professor of animal and poultry sciences, is the junior adviser.

The Virginia Tech chapter participates in many notable events in Virginia as well as on campus, such as the Virginia State Fair, the animal and poultry sciences New Student Family Picnic, the Farm & Family Showcase, and the YMCA craft fair. It will be preparing and selling barbecue chicken at the Ag Econ/NAMA club's auction at Virginia Tech on March 22.
