Piedmont Virginia Residents Awarded Scholarship at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va., March 28, 2002 -- Maurene Currin, junior at Virginia Tech, has been awarded a scholarship to pursue her studies in animal and poultry sciences.

The daughter of Earl C. and Lucy H. Currin of Lunenburg, she has been named a recipient of the $1,000 A.L. "Ike" Eller Jr. Scholarship for the coming fall semester.

She is active in Alpha Zeta, Golden Key Honor Society, and the Block and Bridle Club. She has served as ambassador for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, a volunteer at the college beef barns, a ruminant nutrition lab assistant, a teaching assistant for animal agriculture, and a tutor at Prices Fork Elementary.

Currin has also received the Southside chapter of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association Scholarship, the Reese O. McCormick Jr. Scholarship, and the Ralph Hunt Student Leadership Scholarship, as well as being named to the dean's list.

Jessica Bricker of Jetersville, a freshman at Virginia Tech, has been awarded a scholarship to pursue her studies in animal and poultry science.

The daughter of Daniel Bricker and Shelby Hulslander, she has been named a recipient of the $1,000 Ralph E. Hunt Scholarship for the coming fall semester.

She is active in research, showing cattle, and doing farm work while in college. Bricker conducted a two-year research project on rotational grazing at a Virginia Tech research center while still in high school.

She has also received recognition through the Charles Drake Scholarship, the Amelia County Alumni Association Scholarship, the Amelia Country High School Scholarship, the Amelia County Fair Scholarship, State Fair of Virginia Scholarship, Grand Champion steer, and numerous awards won at livestock judging and stockman's contests.

John Dillard, sophomore at Virginia Tech, has been awarded a scholarship to pursue his studies in animal and poultry sciences as well as agricultural and applied economics.

The son of Gary and Colleen Dillard of Rice, he has been named a recipient of the $1,000 Ralph E. Hunt Scholarship for the coming fall semester.

He is active in FFA and the Ag Econ Club, and has been a Block and Bridle pledge and an intern in Virginia Tech Career Services. Dillard has also received the Pamplin Leader Award, the Charles R. Drake Scholarship, and was recognized as salutatorian in high school.
