Admissions

To be considered for admission to Virginia Tech, you must complete:

  • eighteen units of high-school course work
  • four units in English
  • three units in math (including algebra II and geometry)
  • two units in social sciences (including one unit of history)
  • two units in laboratory sciences (biology, chemistry, or physics)
  • three additional academic units from college preparatory courses
  • four elective units

Some majors have other requirements, such as an additional year of advanced math or lab science. Most students who are selected for admission have completed more than the minimum requirements and have at least a B+ grade point average.

Freshman applicants are also required to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT I and the SAT II Writing Subject Test).

All students who complete an undergraduate degree at Virginia Tech must complete two units of a foreign or classical language. This requirement may be satisfied by completing two units of the same foreign or classical language in high school or by completing two semesters of the same foreign or classical language at Virginia Tech. Foreign language credits completed in college cannot be used to meet degree requirements. The application deadline for freshmen entering Virginia Tech in the fall semester is February 1. For students transferring from other colleges or universities, the application deadline for fall admission is March 1. The deadline for all applications for the spring semester is October 1.
