Growing Forward
Since stepping into the role of dean last fall, I have had the privilege of traveling across Virginia to meet many of you. The conversations I have had so far have affirmed what makes the link between our stakeholders and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences special: community.
We are connected to our communities and each other like no other college. Our work is strongest when we listen, learn, and move forward together, and with your help, we are shaping a future grounded in innovation, driven by discovery, and inspired by impact at all levels.
Like many academic institutions, CALS spent the past year navigating complexity and uncertainty, from shifts in research funding to broader organizational transitions. But thanks to the collaboration of our people — and the steadfast support of alumni and friends — we pressed ahead, serving Virginia through the teaching, research, and Extension work at the heart of our land-grant mission.
Now, we are entering a new phase. As we look to the future, we are laying the groundwork for a renewed strategic focus — one that turns cutting-edge research into impact in the service of our communities.
You will notice our commitment reflected in this magazine, from students gaining hands-on experiences that prepare them to lead, to research that strengthens our food, health, and environmental systems. You will also find examples of Extension at work in communities across the commonwealth, translating knowledge and discovery into practical solutions where they are needed most.
At its core, CALS has always been about people — faculty and staff who care, alumni who give back, students eager to make their mark, and partners who expand our reach and impact. That spirit of connection drives our mission, from preparing a skilled workforce to supporting resilient farms, driving innovative enterprises and healthy communities.
Thank you for being part of this work and for the many ways you support our college. Together, we will carry forward our land-grant mission and build an even stronger future for Virginia, our country, and the world.
Sincerely,
Mario Ferruzzi
Dean, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
