Description

This course is intended to provide an understanding of the core skills required to be a successful leader in nonprofit organizations. Topics addressed include the nonprofit sector, strategic planning, program development, governance, executive leadership, personnel, fundraising, financial administration, marketing & communications, and volunteer management. Prerequisites: none.

Learning Objectives

Having successfully completed this course, students will be able to:

  1. Discuss the unique role of nonprofits in civil society.
  2. Organize the roles and responsibilities of nonprofit governing boards.
  3. Outline the best practices used in fundraising.
  4. Appraise the importance of financial management in nonprofit organizations.
  5. Construct human resources practices in nonprofit organizations, including recruitment of quality volunteer talent.
  6. Explain marketing and communication techniques used by nonprofit organizations to get their message across to various stakeholders.
  7. Answer the question: what skills and abilities are needed to be a successful nonprofit leader?
